Oh, snap.

My boss has somewhat of problem with curbing her cussing, and the fact that I generally don’t cuss creates an issue for me.  Yes, it is a bar, but she’s also my boss.  I tell her that she reminds me of a sailor each time something colorful comes out of her mouth, which is quite often.

After something particularly vulgar, I said, “[Her name], I think I’m going to look into finishing classes for you, so maybe one day you might actually turn into a lady.”

“You’re such a bitch.”

“Well, sailor, guess today’s not the day for becoming a lady.”

In the sea of green, there was lonely “J”.

Saint Patrick’s Day was filled with puke, pervs, the pub, plenty of people, and I survived it all.  Barely.

From women offering to expose themselves for free beer to men wishing I would inspect under their kilt and everything in between, I can definitely say that March 17th, 2009 was not a boring day.

The day began by waking up at 6:30 am and preparing to get as much done as possible in the lab.  My next six hours were spent frantically trying to purify and check my Polymerase Chain Reaction product in order to make Thursday and Friday a little less hectic.  It was still a bit of a spastic scene as I tried to pipette up and down as rapidly as my thumb could bend.  All that effort allowed me to make it out of the lab 45 minutes later than expected, putting me back at the house around 1:15 pm.  Close to 2 pm a manager from the pub called to say things were starting to pick up, and I was more than welcome to come in early.  Seeing as how I procrastinate with almost everything, that gave me about an hour to get “tip-ready”, put together an outfit, and pack all necessary supplies.  From the process of trying to rush around my disaster area of a room I acquired several bruises, a few scrapes, and was able to sweat the majority of my make-up off.  Not the best start.  And, I had to settle on a simple “Jessica thinks tipping is HOT!” for my jars.  Not very creative, but point made.

Lock and Load, Ladies!

I’m already exhausted and the frenzy hasn’t even begun!  March is the busiest time for an Irish pub for one reason, Saint Patrick’s Day.  The first clue to the initiation of the season was getting called in for an on-call shift almost an hour before I was supposed to check in with the manager.  Today has been a bit of a zombie day due to lack of sleep in general, compounded by losing an hour from the change in time, and a late-night shift on Saturday night/Sunday morning.  And it’s only going to get worse.

From memory I believe there is a “Sexy Kilt” contest on Wednesday, parade through downtown Saturday morning, pre-festivities for the less hardcore patrons unwilling or unable to party on Tuesday, and a “Shamrock Shuffle” 5k charity run on Sunday.  My schedule includes the usual genetics Monday-Friday, but Saturday I will open the pub and then have a tub shift extending to Sunday morning.  Then I am on-call again for a noon shift later that day.  Monday it’s back to the lab and my nitrile gloves.  I requested off Tuesday and a few hours Wednesday morning  to work the actual St. Patrick’s Day, and after I will return to genetics from 10:30am on Wednesday-Friday.  Typing it out helps me realize that I have to rest up, eat my Power Bars, and get pumped to distribute green libations like I have never distributed before.

Grab your push-up bra, an extra small tee to assist with tips, and the willpower to pull through, ’cause it’s GO TIME!
